Light Office Tasks:
There are many light office tasks that are perfect for someone looking for a volunteer opportunity. These include data entry, Newsletter folding and labeling, and other light duties. Volunteer hours are flexible and some tasks can even be done from home.
Please contact the ZOOM Office with any questions or to volunteer: 612-825-2825, ext 1 or info@thezoomhouse.org.
Furniture Movers:
Each month ZOOM House receives many furniture donations for our transitional housing families who typically arrive at ZOOM House with no furnishings. We are in need of additional volunteers to help pick up, deliver, and/or move these furnishings from storage to apartment. Often these deliveries are during the day with occasional evening/Saturday AM availability determined by the availability of the volunteer(s) and the availability of staff. This is a great way to contribute directly to new families by helping prepare the apartment for the new family.
Please contact the ZOOM Office with any questions or to volunteer: 612-825-2825, ext 1 or info@thezoomhouse.org.
Apartment Turners:
We need volunteers to help us turn and prepare apartments for new residents! ZOOM provides furnishings (sofa, bed, table/chairs, dishes, pots/pans, etc) for each new family in our Transitional Housing Program and we are in need of people and/or groups willing to volunteer their time preparing these apartments so that they are a welcoming place for families to come HOME to.
Please contact the ZOOM Office with any questions or to volunteer: 612-825-2825, ext 1 or info@thezoomhouse.org.

Furniture:
Thank you for those furniture donations that have always seemed to come at the right time! We have recently had a number of families complete the ZOOM Program and are therefore in need of some new furnishings for our new families. Specifically, we could use a twin bed and frame, a queen bed frame and a twin bed frame, a microwave, and a dining set. (Regretfully, we cannot accept sofa sleepers or sectionals due to space constraints.)
To arrange a donation, please call 612-825-2825, ext 1 or email at info@thezoomhouse.org.
Items for Welcoming Families:
Ten of our 22 units are transitional housing – we refer to these as our ZOOM Program units. The families that live in these 10 units come directly to ZOOM House from shelters across the Twin Cities and many of them have very few possessions. We like to provide each new family with a Welcome Basket including:
- A large laundry basket
- Laundry soap
- Dish soap
- Hand soap
- Broom/mop
- Towels – bath, hand, face, kitchen
- Gentle household cleaners
- Toilet Paper/Paper Towels/Facial Tissue
- Toothbrushes/Toothpaste
- Body wash/Shampoo/Conditioner
- Bucket/Rubber Gloves
- Bleach and oven cleaner
We also try to provide dishes, pots & pans, pillows and bedding for all new families entering the ZOOM Program. We are in need of these items all year long!
To donate any of these items or an entire Welcome Basket, please contact 612-825-2825, ext 1 or info@thezoomhouse.org.
Area Rugs:
We are in need of some area rugs of various sizes to provide to our families after the Rehab Project as we will be removing the carpeting and installing longer-lasting flooring (the specifics are yet to be determined).
Staffing Update:
We are pleased to announce that Anne Ingvoldstad has accepted the position as ZOOM House Director.
Zion Adopts Fair Trade and Environmental Policies
Zion Lutheran Church’s Fair Trade Policy
Micah 6:8: He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 6:8 calls us, as Christians, to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly. Zion’s Fair Trade commitment helps Lutherans answer that call by righting the injustices of small-scale farmers around the world and being responsible stewards of God’s creation. By our using Fair Trade coffee and other products in Zion and in our homes, we guarantee that farmers will earn the income they need to feed their families, educate their children seek medical care and improve their communities. Therefore, it is the expectation of Zion Lutheran Church that all groups and individuals who use our facilities adhere to our Fair Trade policy.
Zion Lutheran Church’s Environmental Policy
Genesis 1: 24-25 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so... And God saw that it was good.
Zion’s concern for the environment is shaped by the Word of God spoken in creation; care for the earth is a profoundly spiritual matter that each and every one is called to be a part of. Zion heeds this call by using eco-friendly, compostable disposable products, and recycling whenever possible. Therefore, it is the expectation of Zion Lutheran Church that all groups and individuals who use our facilities adhere to our environmental policy.
Lyndale Community Dinner
Wednesday evenings at 6PM.
Building community within the Lyndale neighborhood is one of the cornerstones of our mission at Zion. And nowhere is this more important than in the heart of the city. Neighbors who know and watch out for each other keep neighborhoods safe and make them better places to live. The Lyndale Community Dinner provides a place where neighbors can simply meet and share a meal.
Zion created the Lyndale Community Dinner in the fall of 2006. We serve a hot nutritious meal to everyone who comes, anywhere from 40 to 75+ people. There are a lot of families with children, as well as older people who come for the fellowship as much as the meal. Adults are on hand before and after dinner to help the kids with their homework. Certified nutritionist and cooking instructor Karen Blanchard oversees all food preparation and educates the community on food preparation, nutrition and healthy eating.
Zion’s 6th Annual Sharing Thanksgiving Community Dinner took place on Thanksgiving Eve 2011 and we served a delicious Thanksgiving feast to more than 100 people!
